Renovating a kitchen is similar to assembling a jigsaw puzzle. You start with the edges and work your way in. Every day I step back and admire the progress of my kitchen. I’d say it’s about 75% done. But with each inspection, I realize that percentage may be going down.
The one thing I ordered ahead of time, but didn’t think I’d run out of it this soon, was a Costco-sized bucketful of patience. It started with ordering the wrong sized cabinets. Then my LG titanium fridge starting beeping. The beeping wasn’t a big deal, until I came home Sunday afternoon to find the inside of the fridge warm and the contents spoiled. Not cool (pun intended). Someone is coming today to either fix it or replace it. I’m calm again. Now it turns out the crown molding was attached upside down. It will be fixed, I’ve moved on. Even the missing cabinet dampers didn’t phase me. However, it now appears the side base cabinets may be too high which poses an issue with the toe kick.
“You’re going to have to live with it,” I was told.
Now, I’ve been pretty patient up until this point. Marco and his Merry Men have been busy with another job uptown and I’ve gotten a bit of the shaft, but no more. Like that line from the 1980’s Meineke commercial, “I’m not gonna pay a lot for this muffler,” I’m not gonna pay a lot (more) for this kitchen. Especially in time.
When doing any type of renovation, mistakes are bound to happen, it’s inevitable. Heck, it’s life. As an optimist I hope (and plan) for the best, but as a realist, I know (and accept) that mistakes will happen. I can get upset, but in the long run, it only makes the issue worse. But seeing, actually, smelling the warm hummus, the bad yogurt and the rancid Tazo Chai Latte mix was the last straw on the camel’s back. My patience was starting to wane.
So I took a deep breath and went to the gym. The ten-block walk calmed me. The 45 minutes on the stair machine eased my anger. But it was watching ABC’s “Extreme Home Makeover” about foster parents who didn’t have much and still adopted five siblings, that made my kitchen issues obsolete. I should be so lucky that this fakakta fridge is my biggest issue. So, until next week when I order the countertop…
